How to Protect Your Hair While Swimming

Janet Gilbert

We tend to spend a lot of time in the water for obvious reasons (it's SO HOT) during the summer months. While we want you to stay cool, we also want you to protect your hair while swimming. Check out a few of our tips to help keep your hair healthy when taking a dive this summer:

1. Apply a leave-in conditioner before swimming. Applying a leave-in conditioner protects your hair against chemicals in the water. It also makes detangling easier and keeps your hair soft.  after swimming.

2. Rinse hair after swimming. Rinse your hair immediately after getting out of the water to get rid of any chemicals or saltwater you come into contact with. Don't allow the chemicals to sit. Rinse right away!

3. Wear a swimming cap. Wearing a swimming cap protects from the sun. It won't keep your hair from getting wet, but it keeps chlorine away from your roots.

4. Wear hair in braids or a ponytail while swimming. Wearing protective styles will help eliminate tangles. Just like a swimming cap, wearing your hair up can help keep chlorine away from your hair and scalp.
