Toxic Ingredients to Avoid

When you shop for hair products, do you pay attention to the ingredients that's in them? If you want natural products, you will have to take the time to research them. The product name can be misleading at times. There are also semi-natural hair products that offer a lot of natural ingredients but may have synthetic colors and fragrances. In this blog, we will give you a list of some toxic ingredients found in hair products that you should avoid. 

Sodium lauryl sulfates/ Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES): derived from coconuts. Found in most shampoos and may be present in scalp treatments, hair color, liquid soap, laundry detergents, body wash, and toothpaste. 

Parabens: often listed as methyl paraben, ethyl paraben, propyl paraben, butyl paraben. Preservatives for products and used to stop the growth of bacteria. Also linked to breast cancer. 

Phthalates: a type of plastic used in hair products to moisturize and soften; found in nail polish. Links to toxins that may affect male reproductive and developmental abilities. 

Paraffin: also known as crystalline petroleum wax. Acts as a binder, foam stabilizer, emollient, and water repellent. 

Formaldehyde: a by-product of and released by a number of cosmetic preservatives. Highly toxic to human immune and respiratory systems. Found in cigarette smoke and linked to cancer. 

Resorcinol: common ingredient in hair color and bleaching products; a high skin, eye, and lung irritant. Toxic to the immune system.
